Get the Look: 4 Ways to Maximise Light in Your Home

We all want our home to feel light, airy, and welcoming—that’s a given. But this often comes with a trade-off. As great as it is to have a light feel, you don’t want this to affect your sense of privacy or come at the expense of your home’s cosiness—especially when the long winter nights draw in.

So how can you maximise light in your home, making the space as welcoming as possible, while keeping it as snug and private as needed? Throughout this piece, we’re going to explore 4 of the most innovative ways to do just that.

1. Switchable Glass Conservatories

This should come as no surprise. Glass-panelled conservatories, also known as “four seasons rooms”, are great places to relax, with both light and heat streaming in during the summer.

However, there are some downsides. For starters, the fact that they’re entirely glass-panelled makes heat regulation difficult during the cold winter months. If you ever want to keep the heat in or out, then you might think to install curtains—but rigging up a proper curtain/blind system over your conservatory’s ceiling is a difficult task. What’s more, many people feel like they need to install full out corrugated or frosted roofs just so that they can maintain a spot of privacy from their neighbours.

So how can you benefit from the light and airiness of a conservatory while solving any potential heat or privacy issues? Simple: install a Smart Glass Conservatory. With the help of a simple electrical switch, you’ll be able to change the glass from translucent to clear in an instant. And you can even hook it up to your smart home device like Alexa or Google Home.

There are two potential options when it comes to building your Smart Glass Conservatory. First, you could use our double-glazed Switchable Smart Glass, manufactured by coating a non-adhesive, extra transparent version of our Switchable Smart Film onto the glass. Second, you could alternatively choose to retrofit our Self Adhesive Switchable Smart Film onto existing conservatory glass, helping you reduce solar gain by about 30%.

2. Switchable Smart Glass Skylights

Skylights have a transformative effect on your home, letting in plenty of natural light and opening up your entire living space. You might consider installing one above your dining room table, so you feel like you’re eating under the stars. Or if you’re an early birdand like to rise with the sun, you can even install one in your bedroom.

That being said, their lack of privacy can be a slight annoyance—especially if you live in a built-up area with plenty of nearby neighbours. Switchable Smart Glass Skylights, manufactured using PDLC technology, allow you to transform your skylights from frosted/opaque to clear at the simple press of a button.

With Switchable Smart Glass Skylights, no longer do you have to pick and choose between maximising light in your home and privacy.

3. Switchable Glass Floors

The first two recommendations—conservatories and skylights—are both great at letting external light into your home. But is there a way to maximise the impact of the light that’s already within your home?

Fortunately, there is. By installing Switchable Glass Floors, whether above basements and cellars or even as the base of your swimming pool (if you’re lucky enough to have one), you’ll make the most out of the light inside your home, brightening everything up in the process whilst making your space feel larger.

4. Switchable Glass Staircases

When was the last time you revamped your staircase? The likelihood is, it’s been a while, if ever. But given how much space staircases take up; it’d be a shame not to put them to good use interior design-wise.For example, one of our customers decided to use Smart Glass Staircases above their bathroom. When occupied, it would switch from opaque to translucent in a second—but at other times, it would let much-needed light into the room. In this particular project, the customer also had a cleverly placed skylight above the switchable stairs, allowing for uninterrupted stargazing from the bath, by simply switching the film to clear.
