College Chooses Intelligent Glass for New Refurb
Over the last year education all over the world has been affected due to the global pandemic, with UNESCO noting that at the height of school closures over 1.5 billion learners were affected. It’s no surprise that after 12 months of stop-start schooling and remote learning, schools are investing in improving their facilities ready for when students return, creating a more modern and welcoming environment.
Intelligent Glass, along with the Pro Display Group, are no stranger to working with the education sector, providing Smart Glass and innovative display solutions to universities and schools across the globe. In one of our latest installs we stayed close to home, manufacturing and installing our Switchable Smart Film as part of a brand new development at Barnsley College.
Obviously in these challenging times health and safety is more crucial than ever, so we made sure COVID restrictions and regulations were followed throughout the complete manufacturing and installation process. Prior to the install, our team visited the college to conduct a full site survey, discussing the product in detail and determining the location of any necessary connections, also completing a method statement and risk assessment to ensure the install would run smoothly and in line with all current government guidelines.
We supplied and installed 4 pieces of our Self-Adhesive Switchable Film over the course of one day with a streamlined installation team in order to keep social contact to a minimum between both parties. Our Smart Film is manufactured with a self-adhesive layer on one side, making it easy to apply to both new and existing glass surfaces. Not only is this more cost effective than replacing the existing glass for a more private solution, customers also benefit from the option to switch between clarity and privacy at the touch of a button!
This particular space is the premier room used by the college for internal meetings as well as hosting visiting parties, designed to showcase the best of what the institute has to offer. Switchable Film is a great way to update existing interiors by transforming them into multifunctional spaces, ideal for showing off to visitors with the option to implement privacy at any given time. Smart Glass also known as Electric Glass, is widely still unfamiliar to the general public and is often specified by designers when creating ‘futuristic’ interiors, so imagine the effect this technology could have on prospective clients and decision makers!
The beauty of Switchable Film is in its versatility. With this application the film was manufactured to fit the existing panels perfectly, covering the entirety of the existing glass surface, but the possibilities don’t stop there. We can create partial smart glass partitions for instance with only a third of the glass being ‘switchable’ – a perfect option for projects with a smaller budget or a demand for as much natural light in the space as possible. The retrofit nature of our smart film also allows for us to create Curved Switchable Partitions, acting as a unique focal point in any interior as well as a flexible working space.
Whilst turned off, our Switchable Film can even be used as a Rear Projection Screen, especially handy in applications that lack wall space or just want to make a statement! Providing a unique canvas for projecting HD/4K images, our Switchable Smart Projection Film is most commonly used in meeting rooms but can also create a memorable window display. We previously supplied the Ruskin School of Art with our Self-Adhesive Switchable Film for use on their external windows, providing an insight into a working student art studio by day and a medium for showcasing artists work by night through the use of rear projection.
By incorporating our Switchable Film into their newly refurbished meeting space, Barnsley College have opened themselves up to a world of possibilities for how their space can now be used. Project Manager at the college, Peter Carter, was happy with the outcome of the project saying:
