What Is Privacy Glass & How Does It Work?
What is Smart Glass?
Smart/Switchable Glass is a PDLC glass technology which can be switched from frosted to transparent when an electrical current is applied, providing instant privacy with the click of a button. These innovative glass products provide instant privacy and are available in toughened, laminated, double glazed, fire rated and acoustic options.
What is Smart Film?
Smart/Switchable Film lets you transform windows, partitions, plexiglass/acrylic, or other transparent surfaces for instant switchable privacy and security on demand.
Our Switchable Film is manufactured either as a non-adhesive film for glass and acrylic lamination or with a self-adhesive static cling layer which allows for a retrofit solution.
Why would I need Switchable Film or Glass?
You would need Switchable Film or Glass, also called Smart Glass, if you want to dynamically control the level of privacy and light transmission in a space, allowing you to switch between a transparent and frosted state, whilst providing privacy on demand and still allowing light to enter.

Why Should You Invest in Switchable Glass?
How does Smart Glass work?
When an electric current is applied to Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals (PDLCs), all the liquid crystals become aligned, allowing light to pass through. When no electric current is applied the liquid crystals are randomly scattered, making the glass frosted.

Does Switchable Glass require a special type of frame?
No, Switchable Glass is designed to fit in standard framing as if it were standard clear glass. Whether this is toughened glass for a partition, laminate glass for an internal screen, or double glazing for your windows, no specialist frame is required.
Can I display images and videos on Switchable Film and Glass?
Yes, in their frosted mode, Switchable Film and Switchable Glass are high definition rear projection screens, allowing images / videos to be projected onto the rear side, to be viewed on the front side.
Switchable Glass Front Projection Screens are also available if space is limited.
What are the benefits of Switchable Glass and Film?
Switchable Smart Glass and Film can be switched between clear and frosted states. This makes it a versatile privacy solution that is easy to use and maintain. Additionally, it allows natural light to pass through while still providing privacy.

When should I use film over glass?
Switchable Film is a cost effective solution that removes the need for new glass. For example, it may be an afterthought once you have had new windows installed and have no requirement for them to be replaced.
What does ‘bite’ refer to in glazing?
In glazing, a bite is the section of the glass edge that is enclosed within the frame or glazing system to ensure it stays securely in place.
Are shapes, holes and cutouts possible?
Yes, most shapes and cutouts are possible, although very intricate designs may need to be simplified. If you want to check the feasibility of your design, contact our team!

What can you use Switchable products for?
- Privacy: Switchable glass is widely used to provide on-demand privacy in settings like bathrooms, conference rooms, and medical facilities.
- Solar Control: By blocking sunlight and heat, switchable glass can help regulate temperature and reduce energy consumption in buildings.
- Projection Surfaces: When opaque, switchable glass can serve as a high-definition projection screen, making it suitable for presentations, digital signage, and entertainment.
- Architectural Design: Switchable glass can be incorporated into various architectural elements, such as windows, partitions, and facades, to create dynamic and visually appealing spaces.
Can I install Smart Film to existing glass?
Yes, our Self-Adhesive Switchable Smart Film can be retrofitted to existing glass e.g. windows, doors, partitions. It is manufactured with a self-adhesive static cling layer on one side (peel and stick) which makes it easy to apply to both new and existing glass (no specialist installation equipment required).
What are the applications of Smart Glass and Film?
Smart Glass and Film offer dynamic control over privacy and light.
- Privacy: In homes and offices, they create on-demand privacy in bathrooms, bedrooms, and meeting rooms.
- Healthcare: Hospitals use them for patient rooms and operating theaters, ensuring hygiene and privacy.
- Retail: Shop windows use them for dynamic displays, switching between transparent and opaque for showcasing products or creating privacy.
- Projection: The opaque state acts as a projection screen for presentations or advertising.
Essentially, anywhere you need adaptable control over visibility and light, Smart Glass and Film can be a solution.
Can Switchable Smart Glass be used / installed externally?
Switchable Smart Glass can be used on external facing windows, for example a bathroom window in a home. However, at least one side of the product must always face internally, Smart Glass has UV protection on its externally facing side, so applications such as garden balustrades or balcony glass are not possible.
What is PDLC technology?
Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) consists of liquid crystal micro-droplets which are suspended in polymer. In the film’s natural state the PDLC molecules are arranged randomly which causes light waves to be bent in random directions, resulting in a frosted appearance. When an electrical current is passed through the PDLC layer, the liquid crystal molecules align with each other, allowing light to pass straight through, like regular glass.
What is the difference between PDLC and SPD technologies?
When an electric current is applied, PDLC switches from frosted to transparent, while SPD switches from dark to transparent.
- PDLC: Uses liquid crystals that align when an electric current is applied, making the glass transparent. When the current is off, the crystals scatter light, making the glass opaque (frosted).
- SPD: Uses tiny particles suspended in a liquid. When an electric field is applied, the particles align, allowing light to pass through. When the field is off, the particles are randomly oriented, blocking light and making the glass dark.
How can Switchable products be integrated into existing construction projects?
Switchable products are integrated into existing structures by:
- Applying a self-adhesive smart film to existing glass and connecting wiring.
- Replacing current glass with smart glass panels and connecting wiring.
Can Switchable Glass be used for privacy in skylights / roof lights?
Yes, switchable glass is excellent for privacy in skylights. It uses PDLC technology to change from clear to frosted at the flick of a switch, offering on-demand privacy. This eliminates the need for blinds or curtains, maintaining a clean aesthetic and maximising natural light. It’s ideal for spaces where discretion is needed without sacrificing daylight. Switchable glass also offers better insulation and UV protection compared to traditional skylights.
Can Switchable Glass be used for security and defence applications?
Yes, switchable glass/film can be used for:
- Privacy and Security: Provides on-demand visual security for sensitive areas.
- Command Centers: Offers adaptable transparency for dynamic control of information display.
- Vehicle Integration: Improves visibility and camouflage capabilities in military vehicles.
- Rapid Obscuration: Creates immediate visual barriers in critical situations.
