Award winning architects choose Intelligent Glass
Barbara Weiss Architects' refurbishment of the Wokingham Medical Centre has won a Building Better Healthcare award, scooping the gong in the "Best Primary Care Development - Refurbishment" category.
Previously a redundant Nineties' office block, the extensive refurbishment and extension creates one of the UK's largest single-site GP practices: and christened the Wokingham Medical Centre. Swindon-based Beard Construction oversaw the build.
As part of this impressive project, BWA specified switchable glass double glazing from Intelligent Glass to meet both aesthetic and functional criteria.
Constituting a major part of the building's visual impact, the panels combine with an oak frame to form a luminous curtain wall of privacy windows for the 1st and 2nd floor consultation rooms.
In addition to simultaneously providing the consultations rooms with privacy and daylight, the switchable glass panels also play an important role in meeting infection control requirements. Intelligent Glass windows remove the need for fabric curtains or blinds, which become contaminated and need to be disposed of and replaced every six months.
